Game Server Lingo

You might come across some terms you're not familiar with when shopping for a Game Server Provider. Here are a list of common terms you might come across.

Common Game Server Terms

  • Slot(s) - This is in reference to the max number of players for a server (EX: 32 Slot Server would have a maximum of 32 players).

  • Operating System - This is the type of "OS" the Game Server Provider is running. Typically you'll see one of these two: Windows or Linux.

  • Datacenter - This is where the Game Server Providers servers are located. These are places that have fast connections and host a large amount of servers.

  • FTP - FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocol". You'll be using this most of the time to modify your server files (edit, add, and so forth).

  • FTP Client - This is a program thats uses "FTP" to connect to your Game Server. I personally use FileZilla

  • Bandwidth - This is the amount of traffic sent and received from your server. There shouldn't be any limit on this for a Game Server.

  • RCON - This stands for "Remote Console". Usually you have to set a password for this and then you can execute commands on your server. Usually used to admin a Game Server (kick, ban, change maps, etc).

  • Lag - This is in reference to poor pings / choppiness in the Game Server. For example you shoot a player but everything seems a couple seconds off.
